A Silurian mystery - Why are some of the fossils broken?

Fragments of bryozoans

Try to imagine the creatures when they were alive. The fan bryozoans are very delicate structures, whereas the branch bryozoan is much more robust and chunky.

The fact that some of the fossils are broken suggests that something has clearly happened to the creatures. But what?

Are all of the fossils broken?

Did the animals live in the positions that we find them in now as fossils?
