Earth Scientists use evidence in the rocks to reconstruct the distant past. Geology and especially palaeontology (the study of fossils) is a lot like detective work.
When detectives arrive at a crime scene, they use clues, evidence and deduction to draw conclusions and solve the crime. Although they did not see the event take place, they can use the evidence to reconstruct the crime.
