Welcome to the Cambridge Museums and Botanic Garden Big Draw Gallery
Saturday 6 to Sunday 28 October 2007
pArtworks
Join in with the biggest-ever game of museums and galleries ‘Consequences’!
Consequences is a drawing game which mixes up parts of different things to create something completely new and usually quite weird.
The Cambridge University Museums, Botanic Garden and the Folk Museum contain all sorts of wonderful objects waiting to be mixed up! Can you imagine a creature with the legs of an Egyptian mummy, the body of a penguin and the head of a T. rex? Or how about a tree trunk for legs, the body of Hercules and a head from a totem pole?
Use the links on the left to explore the many free events taking place during the month of October. Check back to see the creative results displayed in this online gallery.
Details of all Big Draw events can be found on the Big Draw website
Want to have a go at the Consequences game at home? You can download the instructions and drawing worksheet in PDF format (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) using the links below:
Polar pArtworks - Saturday 6 October 2007 at Scott Polar Research Institute Museum
With biscuits for heads, maps for bodies and feet from an emperor penguin, Polar pArtworks created zany creatures inspired by the coldest places on Earth.
With artist Lara Sellen to inspire and encourage them, visitors created sledging flags from paper and wool. Sledging flags from the great Polar explorations of the past not only helped make sledges easier to see at a distance, but also gave a sense of pride, loyalty and belonging to the sledging teams. Penguins, polar bears and other objects from the collections of the museum adorned the designs of the sledging flags by visitors exploring the museum...

Vacuum cleaners, clay pipes and Victorian toys are just a few of the artefacts that inspired children to create the most fantastic consequence people at the Folk Museum.

pArtworks and Cambridge Curiosity and Imagination workshop - Saturday 20 & Sunday 21 October 2007 at Kettle's Yard
Artist Alex Hirtzel led our full day of drawing on Saturday 20 October. We worked on long rolls of paper in both the house and gallery and created stories for objects that appeared repeatedly on their adventures through jungles and across oceans.
On Sunday 21 October, we held a Cambridge Curiosity and Imagination workshop with artists Anne-Mie Melis and Sally Brown. Working on a massive sheet of paper in the Education Room, we drew birds in charcoal and graphite, responding to the exhibition Henrik Hakansson: Three Days of the Condor.

Palaeo pArtworks - Saturday 27 October 2007 at Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences
Artist Sarah Blake led a relaxing and focussed day of drawing for all ages. Working in black on white and white on black we created some beautiful monochrome pictures of fossils and minerals found in the Museum. We learned about using charcoal, chalk, gel pens and pencils to create different effects in our work. We also played the pArtworks drawing game and invented some amazing mixed-up fossil creatures.
